What’s it like being a Tenerife travel writer
By Joe | September 4, 2007
My writing colleagues in the UK often ask “What’s it like being a travel writer in Tenerife?”
Well, like any journalists in Spain will find, it’s got it’s plus and minus points. There’s no arguing that being a travel writer anywhere is a marvellous way to spend your working life, but for me, being a travel writer based in Tenerife is a particular hoot.
I may not have the same networking opportunities as my bretheren, say in London. I also need to add a Gatwick or Madrid leg on to most trips I go on. However, these are minor irritants when compared to my working environment of a silent valley overlooking the ocean (see pic), almost ever-present sunshine and the relatively low cost of living I have to pay for the privilege of being in such a location.
Being the only member of the British Guild of Travel Writers living in Tenerife also affords me the boast of ‘owning my niche’. That’s not to say I’m asked to write every single damned feature on Tenerife, but I am considered to be ‘our man in Tenerife’ for quite a few publications.
So all in all, despite my isolation, I wouldn’t give up being a Tenerife travel writer for anything… well maybe a bestselling author based in Tenerife… but that’s about it.
