Obama coming to Tenerife
By Joe | November 19, 2008
Although the number of tourists visiting these sunny shores might be a bit down, the number of A-listers heading this way (supposedly) goes up by the day.
Our beloved President of the Cabildo, Ricardo Melchior, has confirmed that Barack Obama is heading this way – though he doesn’t know when; “It could be in three months, six months or a year, but he’s definitely coming.” Hopefully his geography will be better than the last numptie leader of the US and he’ll already know that the Canary Islands are not in the Med.
Perhaps a little more certain – but only in Tenerife terms – is the imminent arrival of Sir Paul ‘Macca’ McCartney. Negotiations are currently being held to bring the ex-Beatle to the south of Tenerife for a major gig. Apparently it depends on hotels and tour operators committing to buy enough tickets before the gig goes ahead. ‘Sometime in January’ is the latest date to be mentioned.
Also on the music front, and certainly more exciting from my point of view, is the fact that talks are being held with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers to bring them to Tenerife for a one-off concert at a brand new venue. It’s still in the early stages – but talks are ongoing. Watch this space.
