My 5 minutes of fame in Tenerife (well, 1-and-a-half at least)
By Joe | January 2, 2009
So there I was inspecting one of my favourite Tenerife hideaways - the Hotel San Roque in Garachico - when a tap on the shoulder made me nearly drop my clipboard:
“Joe! What are you doing here?” said Cathy Bartrop, founder of TravelGuru.tv
The last time I’d seen Cathy was on a wet November day in London. We were part of a posse of travel journalists, broadcasters and producers invited to a champagne breakfast cruise on the Thames during the World Travel Market at Excel. The Tenerife Tourism Corporation were keen to show off their latest plans for rescuing the island from its current dip in tourist numbers. This involved champagne, bloody marys, gofio and a generous distribution of bananas. Hey, at least it’s a plan.
During that mingling thing that you’re supposed to do at these events, I got chatting to Cathy who told me of her plans to film in Tenerife. I immediately launched into a spiel about where to film, why to film it, and who to film it with. Me. Naturally.
Unfortunately Cathy already has a stable of experienced tv presenters that she works with and thus politely declined my offer. I think the real reason of not using me on camera was due to the fact that when excited I talk in short, but incomprehensible stacatto bursts. Also, thanks to November rain and a broken umbrella, my hair looked like I’d just stepped out of a washing machine. Not traits that are particularly becoming for presenters.
Anyway, to cut to the chase, I bumped into Cathy in the San Roque and, perhaps in a pique of guilt, she asked if I’d be interviewed about Tenerife. So here it is. I’m the one looking like a Spanish waiter.
Happy New Year.
