Isn’t it ironic

By Joe | September 7, 2006

Is it just me, or do you find it a bit ironic that in the midst of the vast influx of Africans risking their lives in rickety boats to reach these shores, Binter Airlines have just started a direct route from the Canaries to Mauritiana, the starting point of their perilous journey?

Do you not just think it will now mean that rather than landing on the shores half dead they will roll straight into immigration at the airport and have to be dealt with there. I can’t imagine how bad their lives must be to set sail in a boat like they do with the possibility that they will never reach their final destination.

You’re right, Ruthiebabie, it must be a terrifying ordeal and makes you realise the desperation involved.
The problem with arriving by plane is that you need to show a passport. By doing that, the prospective-immigrants giveaway their point of origin and thus make it too easy to be deported right back. Arriving by boat means their identity is anonymous.
